Pre-filled travel sprays have their own appeal. They are effortless, consistent and particularly useful when you know exactly what you want to wear. The trade-off is simple: refillable options invite experimentation, while pre-filled formats offer ease. A fragrance wardrobe often has room for both.

How to fill an atomiser without losing a drop

Before filling, work on a clean, stable surface away from direct sunlight and open water. Perfume contains alcohol and aromatic oils, so it is worth taking an unhurried approach rather than rushing the process before leaving the house.

Some atomisers fill from the base. These are designed to connect to the exposed stem of a perfume bottle after its spray head has been removed. Others have a screw-top opening and are filled using a small funnel, pipette or spray adaptor. Follow the mechanism of the atomiser itself rather than forcing a universal method - a poor fit can lead to spills or damage to the bottle’s nozzle.

Fill to roughly three-quarters or four-fifths full, not to the absolute brim. A little space helps prevent pressure from pushing fragrance out when the cap is replaced. Close the atomiser firmly, then test one spray over a tissue before placing it in your bag.

If you are switching scents, do not simply pour a new fragrance on top of the last drops. The result can blur two distinct characters into something neither perfume intended to be. Finish the existing fill where possible, then clean and dry the atomiser before introducing another composition.

Keep the fragrance inside as beautiful as the first spray

Fragrance is sensitive to heat, direct light and dramatic temperature changes. An atomiser is not a laboratory vessel, but a few simple habits will help preserve the scent’s original character. Keep it away from a sunny windowsill, a hot car and the constant steam of a bathroom.

Cabin baggage rules generally permit liquids in containers of up to 100ml, subject to airport security requirements, so a 5ml or 10ml atomiser is a sensible companion. Always check the requirements for your departure airport before packing.

Cleaning matters most when changing fragrance families. Rinse a compatible empty atomiser with a small amount of perfumer’s alcohol or high-strength plain alcohol, spray it through until clear, then allow every part to dry completely. Water is not ideal: it can leave moisture behind and interfere with the next fragrance. If the atomiser cannot be properly cleaned, reserve it for one scent or one scent family instead.

Where to apply perfume when you are out

An atomiser encourages restraint. You do not need to recreate your full morning application halfway through the day. One or two sprays on pulse points, such as the wrists or the sides of the neck, are often enough to refresh the presence of a fragrance.
